Driveshaft Design and Application Course

From time to time we sponser a driveshaft class. The course is taught by Paul Cornay of Universal Drive Technologies and Jeff Anderson of Prop Shaft Supply. Paul holds several patents for constant velocity u-joints and has many years of experience in the driveline industry. Jeff is a graduate of MSOE and has many years of experience in driveline and component design. It is geared for engineers and managers involved in the design and installation of our driveshafts.

Typical Course Outline

Driveshaft Design - Jeff Anderson

  • Bearing life calculations based on torque, speed and operating angle
  • Balancing
    • Forces caused by unbalance
    • Practical unbalance limits for different size driveshafts
    • Balancing at a lower speed to a lower unbalance limit
  • Critical Speeds, theory of, calculations
  • Center bearings, dampening characteristics, mounting rules, effects from different forces
  • Torsional Rigidity
  • Grease, types, properties, operating temperatures
  • Lubrication intervals for splines and greaseable universal joints
  • Torque of fasteners, applications and reuse of hardware
Introduction to cardan universal joints - Paul Cornay
  • Kinematics
  • Equations of motion and force
    • Derivation of equations for position, velocity and acceleration
    • Joint phasing for different types of shaft arrangements for two, three, and four joint systems (parallel, intersecting and general)
    • Inertia equivalent angle
    • Secondary couple forces
  • Excitation types, causes, effects and practical limits
    • Torsional Excitation
    • Inertia Excitation
    • Secondary Couple Excitation
  • Basic Cardan Universal Joint Computation Procedures
  • Design of multi-driveshaft layouts
Ending with a Question and Answer Session

This course is open and free of charge to all customers and invitees of Prop Shaft Supply. If anyone in your organization is interested, we can make arrangements. It usually includes a nice lunch and a social hour after, where you can make contacts and discuss special needs applications. If you are interested, give us a call and we can let you know when the next class is scheduled.

Hope to see you there.
